It is exciting to watch a match where a team scores a record. So, we take a look back at some of the highest scores made by teams in Cricket!
The highest score by a team in Test Match cricket was scored by Sri Lanka who made 952/6. The highest score by a team in an ODI match was scored by England who made 481/6 against Australia. The highest score by a team in T20 Cricket was scored by Afghanistan who made 278/3 against Ireland!

Interestingly, all the 5 matches above saw at a triple century being scored in the match.
Furthermore, the highest score by a team in a test match where no batsman managed to score a triple century was scored by Sri Lanka. They managed to pile up a score of 760/7d in a match against India. This is also the 6th highest total by a team in a test match. The highest score by a batsman in that match was 275 by Mahela Jayawardena. Here’s a full scorecard of that match.
This score by Sri Lanka is the only one of two matches in the top 10 list that didn’t see a triple century being scored in a match.
Highest Score by a Team in 2nd Innings of a Test Match
It is often easy to score a big total in the first innings of a test match – irrespective of whether the team is batting first or second. As the pitch wears off, scoring more runs becomes quite difficult. Interestingly, India’s score of 657/7d was the only match with a result. India managed to win the iconic match against Australia in Eden Gardens Kolkata after being asked to follow-on the innings. This innings not only turned the match on its head, but also ensured that India managed to win the series by winning the next test match!
All the other matches in the table above that witnessed the high scores in the 2nd innings of a match ended in a draw.

The above list closes with the iconic match of England and Australia in 2019. It saw a staggering 76 run unbroken last wicket partnership between Ben Stokes and Jack Leach. After his heroics in the 2019 ODI World Cup finals, Ben Stokes was in the middle once again saving the match for England with his brilliant innings of 135 not out!
Likewise, Kyle Mayers of the West Indies scored a brilliant double-hundred in the last innings of the match against Bangladesh in 2021. He, just like Ben Stokes, almost single-handedly won the match for his team!
Highest Score by a Team in the Final Innings of a Test Match

If a team puts up a huge score on the scoreboard, the chances of that team winning increases significantly. But, there have been some interesting cases when even though a team made a high score, it ended up losing the match!
The distinction for the highest score by a team for a losing cause in a Test Match is held by Bangladesh. They managed to lose a test match against New Zealand in 2017 despite scoring 595/8!

In 2017, Bangladesh broke a 123-year old record in cricket for managing the highest score of 595/8 for a losing cause!
Bangladesh piled up 595 runs in the first innings. They declared their innings as they thought it would be a match-winning total. Little did they expect New Zealand to put up a fighting 500+ score in their first innings. Bangladesh collapsed for a meager 160 runs in their second innings. This resulted in a historic victory for New Zealand!
Most 700+ Scores by a Team in Test Cricket
Scoring 700 runs in an innings of a Test Match is quite rare. It doesn’t happen too often. In fact, until 2021, there have been only 24 occasions in a cricket test match when a team has scored more than 700 runs in an innings.
Sri Lanka holds the record for scoring maximum number of 700 plus scores in an innings of a Test Match. Sri Lanka has managed to score more than 700 runs in an innings 6 times! West Indies, Australia and India have scored over 700 runs in an innings 4 times each.
